Cultural Insight

Australia - country of bbq, sports, beer and kangaroos.

BBQ - something that i liked when i first got here, there were free BBQ's, every week and it was simple - sausages, onions and bread, with sauces kept on the side with some cold drink. Then as weeks passes, hot dogs were getting boring and eventually i got sick of it.

Its the same everywhere actually, have the same thing too many times and you can get sick of it.

Next is Sports...

Now this is something i can never get too much of and there is too much here.
Main sport here in Perth is Footy, its an aussie version of Rugby, separate rules and all. Hockey,Cricket and Soccer are quite popular here.

And here comes..BEER!

Alright,i know, at the sight of this word, some people will go "oooh" and "aaah", some parents will adjust their spectacle frames and look closely at the word and this article and some wont be bothered. Well firstly because its not in our culture where there were somethings that were "forbidden" to even think about. Whether it was watching a 18+ movie when you were 12, dieing your hair when you were in school, or getting a tatoo when you got into college. Obviously,a different country will have different cultures and drinking is a culture in this country.
Although people drink alcohol here like water, there are some that know their limits and some that have no idea when to stop, and when that happens, people do embarrasing things, stupid things and things you cannot imagine people would do in a sober state.

Point is slightly different here than the BBQ,

Have the same thing too many times and YOU"LL get sick!

And as for kangaroos, havent seen one anywhere other than the zoo and the wildlife park. Although i hear kangaroo meat is pretty tasty here...will try that sometime.

Culture and tradition is something to treasure and pass on. It shouldnt stop you from trying new things, but dont forget where you're from.

Eye Bot

This is what we're doing in the lab of one of our units..Embedded Systems

The thing with the LCD screen is the eye-bot(second picture), has a microprocessor that we can program to do different kinds of things. Right now, what we're doing is to create that old game "Etch-a-sketch" on this machine.

Etch-a-sketch is the game that was made for children which allows them to draw/scribble with the use of aluminium powder. You can find out how it works on
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:EtchASketch10-23-2004.jpg

This is just lab7 out of lab 10, at the end of the final lab, we are going to attach a camera to the eye-bot which will be on a pair of motorised wheels which are also programmable. The goal is to make a "robot" that can identify something in real life and follow that object. Something like a robot playing soccer, where the robot is focused on the ball.
A bit of C-programming involved, other than that its great to see something like this being made from scratch.

Will blog about this again, at the end of Lab 10

A little about uni...

Some photos of my uni....

This is the civil and mechanical engineering building, where i have most of my classes.

Back home i have my lalwali, here i have my blue cycle, she's been reliable until now :P

THis is the judgement building - Winthrop Hall - this is where the biggest exams are held, i've been a participant here before , rows after rows of desks with mindless students bobbing their heads up and down over a paper with a pen and poking numbers into their calculators ending up sometimes with a grin on their face showing satisfaction and some pull their hairs out in disbelief! - Just adding some drama there.

THis is called a Rose - i think...:p In full bloom...

And this my friends is Dr.Marr's maths class, held in the unusual time of 6pm in Maths Lecture Room 3.

Lesson No. 256 - How to BBQ....

Welcome to yet another EXCITING documentary with your favorite host PmAn.
Today we will be discussing about the theories and recipies behind a good BBQ.
The first thing you need to do is make sure you ARE having a bbq, call up your friends and meet up somewhere, some nice place beside a waterfall.

Then get all the ingreidients you need, spices, meat, veggies etc...

I'll be concentrating today on the preparation part of the BBQ, how do you prepare your chicken and lamb for a bbq?

Heres your answer -->

Chop some onions in to four, thats one onion into 4 pieces(the picture explains all)

Whats onion without some garlic!!, just peel the skin off the garlic cloves like shown.

Once you have all that done...get your handy blender and drop the onions and garlic in together with some water. Blend until you reach a medium viscosity.

Use your blended mixture and pour it into the lamb. Just to make it spicy add some chili powder and salt for taste. CLEAN your HANDS first!! If you forgot, then pretend they are washed:P..

Once you get the rhythm...just start massaging and mixing the marinade with the meat. Think of it as painting...and you are painting a black wall white....cover all the areas!

Massage some more..until your fingers get tired..:P
Once that happens you are ready to move to the next stage..
